A special showcase of NEA's design competition for better public toilets
Launched in March 2021, ILOOMINATION is a competition aimed at students from Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL), to interest youths in playing their part to keep public toilets clean by coming up with ideas and devising creative solutions. Submissions by the participants were judged on their proposals to improve public toilet cleanliness and hygiene, such as designs that aid in keeping toilet seats clean and floors dry. The designs were also scored on originality, user experience, environmental sustainability (for instance, in terms of using natural lighting), and scalability (including the feasibility for installation in public areas).
NEA received 50 entries at the end of the submission phase in May 2021, out of which 10 entries were shortlisted. The respective teams were then invited to pitch their designs to panellists from NEA, and the top three teams with the highest scores were shortlisted to move on to the final round preceded by a mentoring phase. The mentoring session was conducted by the judging panel, comprising: Ms Angelene Chan, Chairman, DP Architects and its group of companies; Ms Lynette Leong, Chief Sustainability Officer of CapitaLand Group; and Mr Ng Chun Pin, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Planning, Corporate & Technology), NEA.
From June to August 2021, the three teams worked on the virtual models of their design solutions, which were displayed through a virtual showcase1. Members of the public were then invited to vote for the design that they felt best promotes toilet hygiene. Close to 4,400 votes were cast during the public voting phase between 27 August and 5 September 2021, with the public votes contributing to 20 per cent of the teams’ total scores at the final judging round on 10 September, when they presented their final proposals to the judging panel. After months of hardwork, we are happy to announce that team Threenity from Ngee Ann Polytechnic took home the title of champion of the ILOOMINATION challenge!
